Meet the Speakers

Eugene Peterson

Eugene H. Peterson was a Presbyterian pastor, theologian, poet, professor, and author best known for creating The Message, his contemporary rendering of the Bible from the Hebrew and Greek texts. Before becoming widely known as a writer, Peterson spent nearly thirty years pastoring a congregation in Maryland and later taught spiritual theology at Regent College.

He wrote more than thirty books, including A Long Obedience in the Same Direction and Run with the Horses. Peterson described The Message as growing directly out of decades of pastoral work—preaching, Bible studies, hospital rooms, kitchens, retreats, and conversations with ordinary people trying to live faithfully.

Why listen: Peterson has an unusual ability to bring theology back down to earth. His concern is not merely knowing about God, but learning to live attentively with God in ordinary life.

James R. Edwards

James R. Edwards is a New Testament scholar and Professor Emeritus of Theology at Whitworth University. His scholarship focuses especially on the New Testament, the early church, and the historical and theological world surrounding Jesus and the Gospels.

Edwards is particularly respected for his work on the Gospel of Mark, including his major commentary, The Gospel According to Mark. His scholarship combines careful attention to the biblical text with theological interpretation and the historical setting of the early Christian movement.

Why listen: Edwards helps you notice things in Scripture you may have read dozens of times without seeing. He brings the precision of a scholar without losing sight of why the text matters to faith.

Earl Palmer

Earl F. Palmer was a Presbyterian pastor, biblical expositor, author, and teacher whose ministry spanned more than six decades. He served congregations including First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, University Presbyterian Church in Seattle, the Union Church of Manila, and National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C.

Palmer became especially known for opening up biblical texts in ways that allowed listeners to make discoveries for themselves. His teaching frequently drew connections between Scripture and writers such as C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Karl Barth.

Why listen: Palmer combines scholarship, storytelling, humor, and the instincts of a lifelong pastor. He does not merely tell you what a biblical passage means; he invites you into the text.
