• Diabuddie

his is our little corner of the internet where you can talk with diabetes-focused AI created from both research and lived experience. Ask questions, learn the language of diabetes, prepare for appointments, explore everyday challenges, or simply talk through a frustrating day. DiaBuddie is here to help you understand and feel supported—not to replace your doctor or healthcare team.

It works through ChatGPT on your phone, tablet, or computer, so you’ll need to sign in to your ChatGPT account. Gretchen Poversen and DiaBuddie do not have access to your individual private conversations simply because you use the GPT.

Medical PSA: DiaBuddie is an educational and supportive AI tool, not medical care. Never use it to diagnose a condition, change medication or insulin, or make urgent treatment decisions. For medical concerns, unusual glucose readings, severe symptoms, or an emergency, contact your healthcare professional or emergency services.

What is Diabuddie GPT?

DiaBuddie began with lived experience. Gretchen Poversen, from First Presbyterian Church of Burlingame, knows personally that diabetes is more than numbers, food, medication, and appointments—it follows you into ordinary life. There are good days, frustrating days, questions you forgot to ask your doctor, moments when the numbers make no sense, and times when you simply want to hear from something that understands the language of diabetes without making everything feel like a medical lecture.

Gretchen created DiaBuddie as a friendly AI resource for people living with diabetes, as well as family members and friends who want to understand and support them. You can ask about everyday diabetes terminology, preparing questions for your healthcare team, food and exercise considerations, technology, emotional ups and downs, or simply say, “I’m having a rough diabetes day.” DiaBuddie can help you organize your thoughts, explain information in plain language, suggest questions to ask your doctor, and offer encouragement—but it does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace professional medical care.

Gretchen’s intention is simple: make living with diabetes feel a little less confusing and a little less lonely. DiaBuddie is designed to be a tool and a companion for learning—not a medical authority. It can help you understand, prepare, reflect, and advocate for yourself while continually pointing you back toward the real people who know you and care for your health.

Why the Name “DiaBuddie”

DiaBuddie combines diabetes with buddy: someone you can turn to when you have a question, need something explained, or just need a little encouragement. It is not meant to be your doctor. It is meant to be a knowledgeable digital buddy for the everyday moments between appointments.

How to Use DiaBuddie

You do not need medical language or a perfect prompt. Just tell DiaBuddie what is happening. Try things like “Explain this diabetes term to me,” “What questions should I ask my doctor?” “Help me understand my glucose numbers,” “How can I support someone with diabetes?” “I’m frustrated with diabetes today,” or “Help me prepare for my next appointment.” DiaBuddie can explain, organize, encourage, and help you find better questions to take into conversations with your healthcare team.

It works through ChatGPT on your phone, tablet, or computer, so you’ll need to sign in to your ChatGPT account. Gretchen Poversen and DiaBuddie do not have access to your individual private conversations simply because you use the GPT.

Who is Gretchen Poversen?

DiaBuddie was created by Gretchen Poversen of First Presbyterian Church of Burlingame, drawing on something no textbook can fully provide: her own experience of living with diabetes. She understands that managing diabetes happens between the appointments—in meals, exercise, work, relationships, technology, frustrating numbers, and the thousand small decisions nobody else sees.

That lived experience inspired DiaBuddie. Gretchen wanted to create a place where someone could ask the “small” question, admit they were overwhelmed, learn without embarrassment, or simply find encouragement from something that understands the world they are navigating. Her goal is not to replace the healthcare team, but to help people become more informed, confident, and connected to it.

Why DiaBuddie Is Free

DiaBuddie is free because asking a question should not depend on your ability to pay for another subscription. Gretchen created it to make understandable diabetes information, encouragement, and help preparing for real medical conversations more accessible to the people who need it.

What brings DiaBuddie to the Cosmic Café

DiaBuddie is part of Cosmic Café because it shares the same goal: using AI to make thoughtful support easier to reach. Gretchen Poversen knows Jan Armstrong through First Presbyterian Church of Burlingame and brought her own lived experience with diabetes into the project. Cosmic Café provides the table; Gretchen brings the compassion.
